Public Notice to Families Regarding New Oklahoma Cell Phone Law

Dear Bulldog Families,

Oklahoma lawmakers recently passed a new law that prohibits students from using personal cell phones and other personal electronic devices during the school day. This law will take effect in all Oklahoma public schools beginning with the 2025-2026 school year.

In response, the Altus Public Schools Administration is working on policies and procedures that align with the new state law and support our local goals: improving student learning, protecting social and emotional health, and maintaining a safe, focused learning environment. We believe this change will reduce distractions and help students stay present and engaged during the school day.

Here’s what you need to know now:

  • Personal devices are not allowed from “bell to bell.” This includes the entire instructional day (8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) at all school sites.

  • Devices covered by the law include: cell phones, smart watches, tablets, laptops, earbuds, and other personal electronic devices not issued by the school.

  • School-issued devices for educational use are permitted.

  • Violations of the policy may result in disciplinary consequences.

There are exceptions allowed by law.  You can access the new law here or go to

We know this is a significant change, and we’re committed to supporting students and families during this transition. Your voice is important to our decision-making.  Please complete the following survey by Thursday, July 24.

Detailed guidance specific to each school site will be shared before the school year begins.  Until then, we encourage open conversations at home about healthy technology habits and responsible device use.

If you have questions, please contact your child’s school office. Thank you for working with us to create safe, respectful, and engaging spaces where students can grow and thrive.

Sincerely,
Roe Worbes
Superintendent, Altus Public Schools
